Today’s
MRO All-PRO Team Awards 2008
Join us in
saluting the best of the best of American maintenance professionals
by Tom Hammel
Welcome to the 2008
MRO Today All-PRO Team awards, where we salute the industry’s
true heroes, the workers on the floor who keep our machines — and
our national economy — humming. As is noted elsewhere in this issue,
manufacturing contributes 12 percent to the United States’ GDP, yet
manufacturers lead the nation in productivity. And leading the
revolution are plant floor maintenance professionals. These are the
people who make us look good in the eyes of the world, and who keep
us competitive with nations whose labor rates are mere fractions of
ours.
When we look at our 2008
All-PROs, an interesting point emerges, all the more relevant in
today’s market where skills and manpower are increasingly premium
commodities: If you want a great maintenance worker, promote a good
machine operator.
Having worked on both
sides of the machine, these cross-trained workers remember how
frustrating the life of an operator can be. As a result, they are
more emotionally invested in their work. They are passionate
professionals, and because they truly understand how operators work,
the solutions they create together are all the more comprehensive,
elegantly engineered and ultimately reliable. And that is the
definition of a true professional, understanding our work, having a
passion for it and being reliable in its execution.
