Maintenance
Intelligence: Inquiring minds
In record numbers,
MRO Today readers tell us what you do, where you work and that yes,
you have purchasing authority in your facilities
by Tom Hammel
In our last issue’s
survey, we asked you about the types of jobs you do, the information
you need, about your product purchasing strategies, and a few
shamelessly self-serving questions to gauge how well we are serving
you.
You had a lot to say,
and more of you said it than ever before. This survey, by a hefty
percentage, received more responses than any previous one. Thank you
all!
Facility size
The survey painted a clear picture of the typical facility of our
respondents. 45 percent of you work in facilities of 100 to 500
workers. Another 17.5 percent are in facilities employing more than
500 workers, and 38.8 percent work with 100 or fewer associates.
Job descriptions
Roughly 50 percent of readers who responded to this survey are
maintenance professionals. Operations and procurement professionals
follow with an additional 20 percent each. Interestingly, their
combined total of 88.7 percent is virtually identical to the 88.5
percent of respondents who have purchasing authority in their
facilities.
While we expect
procurement pros to have purchasing authority, the fact that
operations/production and maintenance counterparts have buying
authority as well confirms the theory that purchasing power in
manufacturing is far more decentralized than would appear at first
glance.
Given the varying
responsibilities of these professionals, it also indicates that
there is no single point of access to them.
Shameless
self-promotion!
The final questions of the survey dealt with the icon system we
created to help readers identify items of interest at a glance. So
far, so good; a solid 70 percent of you have noticed the icon system
since we launched it a few issues ago. More importantly, 28.2
percent of you love it and a further 46.5 percent find it helpful.
To the rest of you, we’ll keep working on it!
