Jack
Smits
maintenance technician,
AMSEC LLC
2002 has been quite a
year for Jack Smits, an eight-year veteran at AMSEC, a joint business
venture between Newport News Shipbuilding and Science Applications
International Corp.
His All-Pro Team
selection comes on the heels of receiving employee of the year honors
for AMSEC’s Carrier Integrated Systems Operations division.
What makes him so
good?
On top of being
responsible for more than 20 diversified machines at the United States
Navy’s Light Industrial Facility in Hampton, Va., he was the
technical liaison with contractors for a $2.3 million building
expansion. As part of that project, he oversaw the transfer of seven
major pieces of production equipment, including a vertical turret
lathe, milling machine, band saw, coil winding machine and flame spray
apparatus.
After the expansion
was complete, he gained responsibility for the new building’s
electrical motor rewind and valve overhaul programs.
Smits
credits his technical prowess to a 24-year stint in the Navy.
