MRO Today

American revolution

by Tom Hammel

Wow. My first three months as editor of MRO Today have blown by like a twister ripping across the Kansas plains. And the wind speed keeps picking up. I’ve just returned from the American Airlines Tulsa Maintenance Base — the largest aircraft maintenance facility in the world — with the story of how American’s management and union are working together to transform the base from a cost- to profit-center for the airline. American Airlines and its union are in air space few companies have dared to enter, and few stories are as important, not just for the free falling airline industry, but for the future of manufacturing in America.

And we not only have their story, we have the people themselves to tell it. American Airlines will be a featured presenter at LMU5, August 22 to 24 in Milwaukee. This is a story every company needs to hear, and that goes triple for companies with union shops. So read the story, log onto www.mrotoday.com and sign up your key people for this truly invaluable experience. Space is limited, so please sign up today.

Who else is coming to LMU5? Shingo Prize and Baldridge examiner Dr. Gwendolyn Galsworth, one of the nation’s leading experts on the visual workplace and author of the new book, Visual Workplace — Visual Thinking, will keynote at LMU5. The event will also feature a special session with Dr. Jay Lee, the international expert on Intelligent Maintenance Systems, and sessions with Tim Davison from Coors, a team of lubrication experts from Advance Lubrication Technologies, and several more leading manufacturers.

LMU5’s workshops include two key events; a morning session with Simpler Consulting on Creating and Managing Flow in office environments; and an afternoon session on Value Stream Mapping with a team of experts from the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership (WMEP).

You can find biographies of our speakers (so far) on page 25 of this issue.

We’ll see you there. I’ll be the guy whose head is spinning.
